2007 chevrolet monte carlo review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Style matters. introductionnever mind the nascar association; or the bad-boy reputation. Never mind that the chevrolet monte carlo is as quick as it looks, with a 303-horsepower, variable-displacement small-block v8 as its top engine choice. Never mind the neo-muscle-car image the monte carlo carries. The monte is primarily about style. Always will be. the monte carlo was born in 1970 as a high-style variant on a more mundane mid-size sedan, and as a high-value alternative to more expensive personal luxury coupes. A big-bore ss version was there from the start, but initially the ss sold at a trickle compared to a torrent of base-model coupes with all the luxury options. the monte quickly developed a dual personality: although conceived originally for visual effect, its unusual proportions seemed to give it an edge in handling balance at medium-length nascar oval tracks. By the late 1970s, the monte carlo was chevrolet's standard-bearer in stock-car competition. Then with each successive generation, chevrolet refined the monte's shape to improve its high-speed performance. The monte carlo is now the winningest nameplate in the history of nascar, which is certainly something to crow about. something comes over us when we're in a chevy monte carlo. Or maybe we're going through the inner loop at watkins glen, bounding off the curbs as we go through the big chicane. The monte just has that look about it. It has that feel about it, too, making it an enjoyable and appropriate car for winding down a rural road in the south with the windows down. It still draws admiring looks in these parts. like we said, it's all about style. last year, 2006, chevrolet face-lifted the monte carlo. The new look is smoother, more mature, more sophisticated. At the same time, a v8 engine became available, for the first time in a monte carlo since 1987. Changes for 2007 are relatively minor. we always bond with the monte carlo whenever we drive one. It's roomy and comfortable and easy to operate. It's fast and fun to drive. It's stable at high speeds for long runs down the interstate and it's great fun on back roads, the same kind of roads that form the roots of stock car racing. The top-performance ss comes with a 303-hp 5. 3-liter v8. A recent upgrade to the standard remote keyless entry allows drivers to use the red panic button to locate a car misplaced in lowe's vast lot without activating the alarm. Powertrain dampening is upgraded for quieter running. Lt is available with more options, too, including a power tilt-and-slide sunroof 900); leather seats 795); six-disc cd changer 295); xm satellite radio 199); eight-speaker premium sound system 250); and universal remote 100). the monte carlo ss 27,740) comes with leather upholstery, heated front seats, xm satellite radio (with a three-month trial subscription); and 235/50 w-rated goodyear eagle rs-a tires on 18-inch machined aluminum wheels. Also standard is a stiffer suspension that gm calls fe4. A convenience package 240) for ss adds a universal remote, auto-dimming inside rearview mirror, and heated exterior mirrors. Also available are polished aluminum wheels 350) and a new rally stripe package 395) in black or silver. Cloth upholstery can be substituted for credit. And, certainly, nothing else looks like a monte carlo. The monte's sharply creased quarters and thick rear roof pillars represent a design heritage now 38 years old. At the same time, the current model is as modern as the latest computer simulation, refined in the wind tunnel for maximum stability with minimal drag. the folks who own them love them. To us, however, the current monte carlo looks as if it were designed by a committee. Individual elements are attractive, but we're not quite satisfied with how they hang together as a whole. we do, however, like the effects of last year's facelift. The front end, particularly, is much smoother and does hang together better visually than before. Where previous montes breathed through two narrow air slots above the bumper and a cheap-looking body-color mesh below it, the new design features blacked-out rectangular openings top and bottom, with a prominent gold chevy bow-tie front-and-center. Similarly, the old monte's odd frog-eye headlamps have given way to a more conventional shape housing three independent lighting units. Chevrolet says the new lamps are not only better looking but are more effective. The front air dam is deeper, smoother, and looks much less like something taped on in the heat of battle. The overall effect is far more handsome. Even here, however, chevrolet has cleaned up the design, with a wider and more subtle protective molding mounted lower on the body; and better-integrated sill extensions. Around back, too, much of the fussy detail of the old design has been shaved off for a cleaner, more grown-up appearance. Gone (and good riddance!) are the frilly air slots in the lower bumper extension, replaced by a solid black panel that nicely frames the ss model's dual exhausts. And the reverse lights, which before looked tacked on to the bumper at random, now extend in elegant oblongs from either side of the license plate opening. new flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise. And in a reversal of typical detroit practice, the re-styled 2006-07 monte actually measures 1. 2 inches shorter than previous model. the monte carlo ss is distinguished by a black-diamond crosshatch grille, and a purposeful rear spoiler that emphasizes the car's nascar heritage. Corvette-inspired bright exhaust outlets also are standard on the ss, and a new rally stripe package is available. interiorthe interior of the chevy monte carlo was restyled for 2006 for a cleaner, simpler, and more tailored appearance. The optional nuance leather-covered seats feature deck seams around their perimeter and french seams on the center cushions. The fundamental shape hasn't changed, but a combination of new bright metal trim and less shine from surfaces that aren't supposed to have added a look of value. A more modern-looking, square-topped shift lever has replaced the previous model's quaint t-handle. Generally crisper lines, especially in the steering wheel hub, definitely aid the upscale impression. Materials have been improved throughout the interior and trunk. we found the bucket seats quite comfortable for around-town driving. Their shape makes it easy to get in and out of the car. Both seats are easy to adjust, and there's plenty of range for short and tall drivers, though headroom was lacking for a 6-foot, 3-inch driver who sat in the car. this is an easy car to operate. Bigger, faster, safer. introductionwatching the recent evolution of the toyota rav4, one might conclude that, like children, little sport-utility vehicles eventually grow up. The next they've grown longer, wider, and taller, with family-size, three-row seating capacity and available v6 power. Cute just isn't enough anymore, and the rav4 is a lot more than cute. after a complete redesign for 2006, the 2007 rav4 gets significant safety improvements. Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted, side-impact airbags are now standard equipment, as are roll-sensing side-curtain airbags for first and second-row seats. Both systems were extra-cost options last year. Electronic entertainment options have also been updated. the recent redesign addressed the buying public's demand for power and space among compact suvs. The rav4's length increased by 14 inches, creating more headroom and legroom for second-row passengers, and increased shoulder room all around. Cargo capacity grew by five cubic feet. Its 3. 5-liter v6 generates 269 horsepower, almost too much for the package, although it adds substantially to the rav4's capabilities. A v6 rav4 can haul as many as seven people and tow up to 3500 pounds, and it really scoots. Each model adds more features. all three trim levels are available with a 3. 5-liter, 269-horsepower v6 and five-speed automatic transmission, increasing the price as follows: base 22,885), sport 24,340) and limited 25,020). All v6 rav4's come with downhill assist control (dac) and hill-start assist control (hac). any of the six models is available with full-time all-wheel drive 1,400). standard features for all rav4s include air conditioning, cruise control, am/fm/cd stereo with six speakers, power windows, keyless-remote locking, manually adjustable passenger seats, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and auto-off headlamps. The v6 is upgraded with p225/65r17 tires on styled steel wheels. All models come with a full-sized spare. options at the base level include a third-row seat 950); an in-dash, six-cd changer 200); a selection of 17-inch wheels, both styled steel 120) and aluminum 440-560); cargo cover 140); roof rack side rails 220); daytime running lights 40); and a towing package for the v6 160) that includes a heavy-duty radiator and fan, transmission oil cooler and 150-amp alternator. The tow package increases the rav4's pulling capacity from 2000 to 3500 pounds. the rav4 sport adds a roof rack with cross bars; rear privacy glass; fog lamps; sport-tuned suspension; p235/55r18 tires on alloy wheels; and combination hard/soft spare tire cover. Options expand to include a jbl premium stereo with nine speakers, a subwoofer and steering-wheel controls, 890); and power tilt-and-slide moonroof 900). The third-row seat is not offered on the sport. the limited model upgrades with dual-zone automatic climate control; the six-cd changer with auxiliary input jack; power-adjustable driver seat; heated outside mirrors; leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob; rear privacy glass; cargo cover and other amenities. Outside, limited is distinguished by a chrome grille; fog lamps; p225/65r17 tires on alloy wheels; and a full, hard-shell spare tire cover. Options include the third-row seat 700-810, depending on engine and drive combination), heated leather seats 1,490) and the jbl stereo 640). A rear-seat entertainment system 1,705) is available only on limited v6. safety features on all rav4s include dual-stage frontal airbags, side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags, latch child safety seat anchors, antilock brakes (abs) with brake assist (ba) and electronic brake-force distribution (ebd), electronic stability control (vsc) and traction control (trac). we're glad to see that toyota has made curtain airbags standard for 2007, because they are designed to provide head protection in a side impact or rollover. Head injuries are the leading cause of fatalities in those types of accidents. Side-impact airbags are designed to improve torso protection. walkaroundno longer a cute ute, neither is the rav4 anywhere near a brute ute. Still, the overall design of the 2007 model is more serious and more substantive than those built a few years ago. There are fewer superfluous curves and less cladding, presenting a more finished appearance. this latest rav4's front end contains all the same elements found on older models, but more tautly composed. The rectangular grille is rounder, the slits below more symmetrical. Headlights are more compact, fog lamps smaller and more focused. A wide track gives the rav4 a more solid stance, which is good news for resisting rollover in emergency maneuvers. a boxier shape defines the side view, the better to accommodate that third-row seat. From the front quarter oblique, the fatter, more upright c-pillar and taillight housing remind us of the subaru tribeca, a larger, seven-passenger suv priced a notch or two above the rav4. An understated indent runs along the bottom of the doors, softening the visual impression of bulk. Taillights are positioned fairly high on the rear fenders. The spare tire bolts into a recess offset to the right in the swing-gate, and doesn't dip below the bumper line. The rear license plate visually balances the spare by bolting into the lower left of the swing-gate, beneath a toyota logo and rav4 badge. interiorinside, the 2007 rav4 is as good as ever, but not necessarily better. Ergonomically, there's little to distinguish it from earlier models. The most noteworthy changes made for 2006 (and carried over this year) are some, shall we say, interesting styling cues. the front seats are supportive but not overly firm, with modest bolsters and decent thigh support. The tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat enables almost any size driver to find a comfortable fit, and without the added complexity (and cost) of adjustable pedals. The relatively high seating position, low cowl and sloping hood make for good visibility to the front. The lengthy side windows ease lane checking. Fully retracting head restraints in the second row and optional third row of seats improve the viewing range through the inside mirror. the second-row seats are less padded than the front seats, without bolsters. It's no surprise, really, seeing as how the seat has to fit three people in a pinch. the optional third row seats barely qualify as such, with flat bottoms and equally featureless backs and head restraints. Access to that back row, by folding and tilting the outboard second-row seats, is not especially easy, but it isn't as much of a strain or as awkward as in some larger, full-sized sport utilities. the rav4's 104. 7-inch wheelbase delivers more than space for a third row of seats. It also allows almost six inches to be added to second-row legroom, compared to models built before 2006. Headroom in the second row also grew by more than an inch, although front-row occupants lost half an inch. the honda cr-v, the rav4's major competitor, has been redesigned for 2007, but the toyota still either exceeds it significantly, or trails it by a fraction, in headroom and legroom, both front and rear. But the cr-v does not offer a third-row seat. Maximum cargo volume (with all seats stowed) is nearly identical: 73. 0 cubic feet for the toyota, 72. 9 for the honda. the only competitor that comes with a standard third-row seat, the suzuki xl7, is also all-new for 2007. It provides more headroom than the rav4, particularly in the third row (by a significant 1. 6 inches). In legroom, the xl7 gives up half an inch to the rav4 up front, but gets that half inch back in the second row, and betters the toyota by almost a full inch in the third row. But in hip room, it's the xl7 that loses by 1. 6 inches up front, gains a scant 0. 7 inch in the middle, and then loses to the toyota by a whopping 5. 1 inches in the third row. placement of the gauges will be familiar to anyone who's owned a rav4. The placement and function of the controls populating the center stack is virtually the same as it has always been, which means very good, as is the arrangement of the hand brake and the shift lever. It's all styled differently, however. The dash is sharply split by a horizontal gash running the width of the car. About the only plus we divined in this garish feature is a bi-level glove box, with an upper bin covered by a retracting lid and a lower bin fitted with a traditional, bottom-hinged cover. materials a. Also very important, the 2007 silverado features an all-new interior that can be outfitted for work or pleasure. the new silverado is designed to continue its reputation among owners as the 'strongest, most dependable and longest lasting truck on the road.' the new styling is bold yet still conservative when compared with the latest pickups from dodge, nissan, toyota and ford. While the sheet metal is all new, the main reason the new silverado looks bolder is that it's three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear than the outgoing generation. (the older-generation trucks will continue to be sold as the 2007 silverado classic. Naturally, not all engines extended cab and crew cab models have back seats and windows in the side doors that power down. The extended cab has rear access doors that are hinged at the rear but that open to 170 degrees to provide full access to the rear seating area. the standard cab can be outfitted with a standard (6-foot, 6-inch) or long (8-foot) beds. This is the previous-generation version and should not be confused with the vehicle covered in this report. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy silverado may not have the aggressive styling of the dodge ram or nissan titan or even the toyota tundra or ford f-150, but its upright design may be considered both bold and appealing to its faithful customers, and they buy hundreds of thousands of silverados each year. the new design gives the 2007 chevy silverado a taller and stronger appearance than the previous generation. Indeed, the new silverado should look stronger because it's some three inches wider in front and an inch wider in the rear. however, a more raked windshield (raked at 57 degrees) and careful aerodynamic and body-building engineering make the truck both quieter on the inside and more fuel efficient. Gm boasts that the silverado and gmc sierra are the first full-size trucks to offer both 300 horsepower and 20 miles per gallon on the highway. the large, gold chevy bowtie badge is set against a wide, three-bar chrome grille. The grille is flanked by stacked headlamps sporting the latest reflector-optics. The front bumper incorporates rectangular fog lamps. the hood has a wide power dome. Bulging front fenders wrap over the front wheels and incorporate the headlamps within their forward sweep. Likewise, the rear quarter panels are punctuated by large faired wheel wells. the rear view of the truck features stacked tail lamps on either side of a tall tailgate that has a sculpted center section that mimics and inverts the shape of the fender flares. built on what general motors calls its gmt900 platform, the silverado shares much of its underpinnings with the tahoe suv, though the pickup truck gets a unique rear frame section that is 245 percent stiffer. Overall, compared to the former gmt800 truck, the frame is 234 percent stiffer torsionally, 62 percent more resistant to bending and 136 percent stiffer laterally. All of this allows such things as reducing the gap between the truck bed and passenger compartment and between fenders and bumpers. It also enhances aerodynamics and fuel efficiency and allows suspension components to provide improved ride and handling characteristics. the front suspension has switched from torsion bars to coil-over shock absorbers and the rack-and-pinion steering gear is mounted to the engine cross member frame to provide enhanced control and feedback. The truck also has a new rear axle design with shocks absorbers mounted outboard and more upright for better dynamic control. interiorthe silverado wt and lt come with what chevy calls the pure pickup truck interior while the ltz features a more luxurious interior. the pure pickup interior is more driver oriented, includes two glove boxes in the dashboard, one of them just about the right size to hold a pair of work gloves and a few small items, and a 40/20/40-split front bench seat with the center section of the seat back folding down to form a wide arm rest with lots of storage capacity. This interior also features larger switchgear controls and interior door handles designed to be easily manipulated even while wearing bulky work gloves. the more luxury-oriented interior includes bucket seats with a permanent center console with 20 liters of storage capacity. The center stack also puts ventilation and audio controls within easy site and reach of the front seat passenger. This version has a single glove box in the dash. extended cabs feature stadium-style seating with an elevated view for those sitting in the second row. Both the extended cab and crew cab versions offer plenty of rear legroom. The rear seat bottoms can be easily be folded up to provide more room on the floor for cargo. Rear seats are split 60/40 so one side can be folded up for cargo while the other is used for seating. chevy says the interior of the new sierra is 20 percent quieter than its predecessor, thanks to enhanced insulation materials, much like those used in the company's sport utility vehicles, and to aerodynamic improvements that reduce wind noise. driving impressionwe've driven two versions of the all-new 2007 chevy silverado on paved and gravel roads in the desert west and north of phoenix.
